Description: The Emily Holmes Coleman Papers consist of 50 linear feet of literary, personal, and family papers. Because of the inclusion of a significant collection of family correspondence, the papers span a period from 1852-1988. The earliest material begins in the 1850s, with letters between Emily Coleman's grandparents. The bulk of the collection (dating 1930-1970) reflects Coleman's life and writing. A small number of letters addressed to Emily's son, John Coleman, in the 1980s completes the collection. The correspondence includes over 31,000 pages of incoming letters and Coleman's letters to others, for example her letters to longtime friend, Phyllis Jones, and Spiritualist Gay Taylor.
