| Description: |
At the time of his oral history in 1986, Ed Horowitz was the Senior Vice President of Technology and Operations for Home Box Office Inc. He had worked for HBO since 1974 after a four-year stint with cable TV operator TelePrompTer Corp. A native of New York City and an engineering graduate of City College of New York, Horowitz became interested in cable when he worked a summer job for TelePrompTer in 1969. When he joined the company full time, he worked on the first AML microwave transmission system to be used in a big city cable system. After moving to HBO, Horowitz continued to work on microwave systems until the advent of satellite transmission. He played a key role in the development of satellites for sending HBO's signal. In his oral history, he also discusses such topics as the scrambling of HBO's signal to thwart signal piracy; the tiering of programming channels on cable systems; the threat video cassette recorders posed to HBO in the early 1980s and how the company met that threat; the issue of when programs are licensed to broadcast TV, pay television and pay-per-view services; the development of fiber optics and some of the internal operations of HBO.
