| Description: |
Gail Sermersheim played key roles in both the operating and programming areas, was a founder of the Cable Television Administration & Marketing Society (CTAM) and Women in Cable (WIC). She was among a handful of women to play a major role in the development of the cable industry as it grew rapidly in the last half of the 20th century. Sermersheim's parents managed a cable system in Jasper, IN, owned by a company called Telesis. When she graduated from Indiana University in 1968 she took a job with Telesis first handling door-to-door sales and later with overall marketing responsibility. In 1978 she was hired by Home Box Office and opened its regional affiliate sales office for the southeast, first based in Palm Beach, FL, and later moved to Atlanta. In her oral history, Sermersheim recalls some of the challenges facing cable systems in the 1970s, the explosive growth of HBO during the next two decades, the founding of CTAM and WIC and the challenges facing women as they moved into leadership positions in the business. She also offers some predictions about the future of cable and advice to young people, particularly women, thinking about a career in the industry.
