Description: Milton A. Chaffee began his three-year employment at Radiation Laboratory in July 1942 as a researcher of high-power transmitter systems. From February to August 1943 he assisted in the field testing of the MEW (Microwave Early Warnings, a ground-based radar for long-range detection or control of aircraft). He shifted his attention to the project engineering of the MEW for use in the European Theater of Operations from December 1943 to July 1944. From July to October of that same year he concentrated on its applicability in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Then, from October to December of 1944 he worked with the Tactical Air commands (TACS) in France and Germany. His last assignment at Rad Lab, December 1944 to July 1945, involved improvements to beacons and MTI (moving target indication). Chaffee participated in the Rad Lab program as a member of Groups 72, 64, 82, and 104, the British Branch of the Radiation Laboratory, and Division 12.
