Description: He talks about home life growing up in Galway city and his mother keeping lodgers. He had grandparents outside Galway in the country and spent some time with them, and during the summer holidays he lived with his aunt in the country. He was company for her when her husband died. His mother's role in the house was to bring up the family. While is father read a lot he can only remember his mother reading one book and suggests that life would have come to a halt if she continued to read. His brother who became a priest brought a lot of books into the house. He remembers few family celebrations besides his father's sister's wedding breakfast and the celebration when his brother was ordained. Talks about hiring the car for the trip to Maynooth and the return to Galway city where people had lit bonfires to celebrate. At Christmas time there was also some celebration although there was very little money.
