| Description: |
Brigid is the eldest of seven girls all of whom emigrated, except for Brigid who remained in Ireland until she was 50 years old, when she emigrated to the United States leaving her husband and two young sons (14 and 12) in Ireland. Her three daughters had already emigrated (two to the United States and one to England and onto the US) and her eldest son had emigrated to England. All of her sisters also emigrated to the United States, one via England. Brigid wondered if England could be considered emigration. All of her daughters worked in secretarial work after they emigrated. Brigid talks about the 'ceile' between neighbours when she was growing up. In her experience this was done mainly by men who played cards and often fought about who had won etc. Her father had two nights a week he went visiting or on a 'ceile', her mother was at home all the time. She describes her mother buying presents for her younger sisters one Christmas and buying a birthday present for the youngest. Brigid worked for six years in domestic service for her primary school teacher before getting married. She describes getting married as moving from one poverty to another.
