Description: Jerry McCarthy grew up in Ardfinnan, Co. Tipperary, in the 1930s and '40s. His father died when he was only seven years old, leaving his mother to rear Jerry and his twin brother with 'an iron hand'. Despite this, Jerry recalls a wonderful childhood of hurling, football, hunting and fishing. Home was a simple three-bedroom cottage, without running water but it was full of music. Both his grandfather and mother played musical instruments and Jerry won many trophies for ceilí dancing.
