Title: Oonagh O'Malley
Document type: Oral history
Accessibility: Free Only
Repository: National University of Ireland, Cork. Irish Center for Migration Studies
Collection: Breaking the Silence
Description: Oonagh was born into a middle class Catholic family in Co. Down. She describes an idyllic childhood of space and freedom and many sporting activities centered around Carlingford Lough and Portstewart. In this region the border was virtually ignored, with frequent socialising back and forth to the Cooley Peninsula, until restrictions imposed by the onset of World War II. Then the small boats took to smuggling of butter and meat from the Republic to Northern Ireland.
