(Civilian) John W. Lawitt, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a civilian who protested against the Vietnam War from 1964 until 1972. John grew up in Abington, PA, and was a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and the American Friends Service Committee while in High School and participated in anti-war demonstrations in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. He attended the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut from 1968 to 1970 and while there joined the Black Panthers, the Students for a Democratic Society, and the Weathermen and participated in anti-war demonstrations. John transferred to the University of New Mexico in 1970 where he continued to participate in anti-war protests until he graduated in 1972 with a law degree.
