(USAF) Raymond J. Merritt, originally from Portland, Oregon, served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1947 until 1950 and in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 until 1979. Ray went to Asia in 1964 assigned to the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 18th Tactical Fighter Wing, at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. From Okinawa, he rotated in and out of Korat AB, Thailand, from where he flew missions over North Vietnam between February and September 1965. Ray's F-105 was shot down over North Vietnam on 16 September 1965. He was captured and imprisoned in North Vietnam, in and around Hanoi, until his release in February 1973. He retired as a Colonel from the USAF in 1979. OH0322 - part of the Raymond Merritt Collection
