(USA) Gary S. Smith, originally from Nobelsville, Indiana, served in the U.S. Army from 1971 until 1995. Gary went to South Vietnam in August 1971 as a part of the 981st Military Police Co. (Sentry Dog) as a Sentry Dog handler. He and Rolf, his black German Sheperd, were stationed at Tuy Hoa until he left the RVN in March 1972. Gary went on to serve the United States for another twenty-three years and participated in Operations JUST CAUSE in Panama, DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in the Middle East, and RESTORE HOPE in Somalia.
