Melvin Alvey was born in Escalante, Utah on January 20,1908. His father died when he was five and Melvin and eight siblings had to work the farm and the livestock from a very young age. Melvin continued farming and running livestock throughout his adult years. He was also the watermaster for the town of Escalante, a job that has never ended, as at 94 years old, he still fills in from time to time.
