| Description: |
Born in Tylertown, Mississippi, on January 22, 1938, Ms. Augustine M. Magee was the oldest of seventeen children. She grew up on a truck farm, helping her father, her siblings, and her mother, who was blind, in the daily chores to keep the farm running. She remembers her childhood as a happy time although while she worked on the farm, she was also attending school. She married at eighteen and had her own family. She moved to New Orleans in 1956 and worked there until having a stroke in 1964, at which time she moved back to Tylertown to care for her aging parents.
