Mrs. Katie Arnold Smith was born on October 16, 1905, in Ellisville, Mississippi. She attended public schools in Jones County, graduating from the Jones County Agricultural High School. After high school, she studied music, earning a bachelor's degree from Judson College in Marion, Alabama, and continuing her music training at the Jacques Malkin Conservatory in New York City and at the Cincinnati Conservatory. She taught music for six years, four years at Judson College and two years at Mississippi State Teachers College (now the University of Southern Mississippi).
