LePoint Cassibry Smith was born on October 29, 1920, in Memphis, Tennessee; she grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi. Her parents were Napoleon LePoint Cassibry and Myrtle Hill Cassibry. From kindergarten through sixth grade, she attended the Hill Demonstration School at Delta State Teachers College; she then attended and was graduated from the Cleveland Consolidated School. She attended Delta State Teachers College and the University of Mississippi from which she was graduated in May, 1941, having earned her B.A. degree. In 1970, she earned her master's in library science from Delta State University.
