Description: Michelle grew up in Queensland and worked in a bank before enrolling as a nurse at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for three years. She joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in June 1989 and undertook initial training at the RAAF Base in Edinburgh, South Australia. She then specialised in communications and undertook trade training at the RAAF Base Laverton, Victoria. Michelle's first position for the RAAF was at the Glenbrook Communications Centre, RAAF Base Glenbrook, New South Wales. Later she transferred to RAAF Base Tindal, Northern Territory, for 12 months before requesting to serve in Cambodia. On arrival in Cambodia she was sent to barracks at Siemreap and worked in the Communications Centre there as part of Australia's involvement with the United Nations peacekeeping efforts during the Cambodian elections. During her time in Cambodia the Communications Centre came under attack and Michelle was involved in the returning of fire by the Australian soldiers. After the elections she ran a detachment to see Australian forces return home safely and stayed in Sihanoukville for an extra month. Michelle returned to Australia in November 1993 and was posted to the RAAF Base Richmond, New South Wales. She decided to train as a flight steward and was posted to the VIP Section of RAAF BASE Fairbairn, Australian Capital Territory. After a debilitating accident, she returned to work in Communications at the RAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales. She was discharged from the RAAF in December 1999 and settled in Melbourne, Victoria. Michelle now works as a flight steward with a commercial airline.
