| Description: |
Gwen Kirby trained as an SRN at St Thomas's Hospital and then at Great Ormond Street. Night duty was 28 nights on and two nights off. They were locked into the nurses home during the day, but she was too tired to mind. She went back to Great Ormond Street in 1951, as Matron. She was there 18 years, during which time she fought to be allowed on committees and looked after her nurses. She was made an LVO on her retirement.
