Spanning more than 300 years, it brings the personal experiences of nearly 500 women to researchers, students, and general readers.
The uses for the collection will be many and varied. For historians, sociologists, students of literature, researchers in genealogy, and others, BWLD will prove a dramatic new resource. These diaries bring us much more than the personal. They provide a detailed record of what women wore, the conditions under which they worked, what they ate, what they read, and how they amused themselves. We can see how frequently they attended church, how they viewed their connection to God, and how they prayed. We can explore their relationships with lovers and family and friends. North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries and Oral Histories Alexandria, Virginia, United States. The internationally acclaimed Ellis Island Oral History Project, based at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, is the oldest and largest oral history project dedicated to preserving the first-hand recollections of immigrants coming to America during the years Ellis Island was in operation: 1892-1954. Begun in 1973 by National Park Service employee Margo Nash, the project has grown over the years to include over 1,300 interviews on audiotape. Each interview includes an extensive examination of everyday life in the subject’s country of origin, family history, reasons for coming to America, the journey to the port, experiences on the ship, arrival and processing at the Ellis Island facility and an in-depth look at the adjustment to living in the United States.
